    Little rubber plug

    I am busy sprucing up Jeniffer's carbs, as part of her make over, and came across something weird, I have never seen before, in the float chamber, just behind the main jet, there is a secondary channel with a little black rubber plug inserted into it, now on only one of the carbs, this little plug has become all soft and squishy, to the point where I had to be very careful taking it out as it would just deform between my fingers under the slightest pressure.
    1)Where does this channel lead to and what is its function, seeing it is bocked off with the little rubber plug?
    2) what is the function of this plug, as it is not in any way a tight seal, I can well imagine fuel seeping past, even a new one.
    3) Most importantly can I get them seperatly and how critical is it to be a perfect fit, or can I just shove the old one back...not that I really want to, but if I cannot buy it alone.....?
    Should be almost done with the carbs today, all going well, will post pics later.

    It is the passage plug for the pilot jet. Pilot jet gets fuel from a passage where the needle jet is, and the passage next to the main jet is plugged. They're very cheap and inexpensive, come in packs of 4 from z1. They need to fit nicely, and theres a part of the float bowl that pushes it into place, and keeps it in place.

      That rubber plug MUST be removed if you are doing a full cleaning of the carbs.

      Pull the plug out, use a small screwdriver to remove the PILOT FUEL JET for cleaning.

      The function of the plug is to obviously plug the bottom port. There is a tab on the bottom of the float bowl that will hold it in place, but it should really be snug and not need to be held in with the float bowl tab.

      With the plug in place, the pilot fuel jet will draw fuel through the main jet, then further restrict fuel flow with its smaller holes. If the rubber plug is NOT in place, the pilot jet won't be bothered much, but the MAIN circuit, which normally draws fuel through the MAIN jet only, will also be able to draw fuel through the transfer port that connects the main jet gallery to the pilot jet gallery and will really upset your main jetting.

      Yes, they are available separately, but prices vary widely. Not sure which suppliers work best for shipping to you, but Parts-N-More has a set of 5 for only $6. Problem with them is that they have a $35 minimum, but it's usually rather easy to meet.

          Thanks guys, looks like I am off to Suzuki tomorrow to order a set, might as well get a set of float bowl gaskets at the same time and make it worthwhile, at least then everything in the carbs is brand new, oh yeah and 3 little wee springs for the air mixture screws.
          Carbs have been stripped, dipped, boiled, sprayed, and baked, just need to assemble them now.

              Yes, painted, sorry, that is what I meant by sprayed (spray painted) then baked in the oven to cure nice and hard
