    stock exhaust mod question

I see in here that the stock exhaust is best, but lots of people run 4-1 pipes, on another site www.dotheton.com there are lots of people who make their own. I dont have a lot of money so stock replacement is out (an entire 4-1 cost less than replacing one side), and when I ordered a vance & hines pipe it was on backorder for so long (more than 2 months)that I had to cancel the order and use the money to buy a car!!!!!

I guess what I am getting at is this: I want to cut my rusty pipes off where the collector/y pipe is welded to the muffler/megaphone and weld on a universal type muffler.

what kind/size/type would be a good match for the old bits, or give the best performance.

has anybody else done this?? was it worth the effort??

A cheap and easy fix is to find a set of Harley take cans, that can be had for next to nothing at most dealers. A slight tweaking of the carbs may be needed.

      Muffler rebuild report

I just refitted a stock set of mufflers which had rusted out baffles. I used a four inch long set of Harley aftermarket baffles, bolted in from the outside of the muffler on the inner side. There are four "can opener" style baffles in the baffle assembly.20 bucks on ebay. I installed them at the front end of the muffler, just inside the joint, after cutting off the original muffler. The refit went easily because all I needed to do was install the new baffle assembly. The original mufflers had two small rust holes which I sealed with epoxy steel. The exteriors were in good shape and polished up well.

I re did the muffler gaskets with wood stove door gasket material to achieve a tight seal.

I had the local mechanic sync the carbs for me, as they were running very rich. After the adjustment and a 1500km highway ride, I can say they work well, and even achieved a 10 per cent fuel economy improvement. Power and performance are excellent, and the mufflers are very quiet. They look stock because on the outside they are.
