    GS1100 dragbike carb probs

Hey everyone, need some tuning advice. Have the following setup. 1982 GS1100, 4v motor, Stage 1 head work (and shave 0.035") from S & K, 1166 10.25:1 Wiseco's, V & H open pipe, all Dyna ignition, individual air pods, Dynajet Stage 3 carb kit.
Bike runs great from 5000 & up, but will hardly run below that. Spits, pops, starts to die out, just horrible. The pilots weren't changed nor were the idle circuit screws. I know it's lean because when I pull out the choke revs jump right away. Guy that installed the kit said there was some issue with the pilots that prevented him from installing the Dynajet pilots. Almost forgot...the mains are the DJ 138's.

How do I richen the idle circuit? How will I know when it's right?
Assuming the pilots are stock (almost certain), where should I start for size? Two up would be my guess. Not 100% that the main is maximized either. It doesn't have to be perfect below 5K, just run decent, as this bike is only used for dragging. Thanks for any ideas.

    Jerry

I have RS's on mine and found the pilots had twisted the orings and plgged up 2... If you have other carbs, its still the pilots I think...

138 DJ's are like running 128 mikuni jet's, heck my 1166 with 34 carbs needed at least 160 mikuni jets. Best thing I did was to get rid of my DJ kit cause it was just too lean with my V&H pipe

dyna jet kits don't come with pilots.
they want you to leave that circuit stock as far as jet size goes.
chef bill may be able to tell you where to go on the pilots as he has a similar engine combo.
are you racing the bike with filters?
        if so...
        remove them.
if something happens and you feel like installing a set of 38 radial slides...there's a local guy with a set for a fair price.
the power difference over the vacuum carbs will make you go poopy on yourself.

Put a set of 47.5 pilots in it, with 150 main jets just to start & tune from there. Ray.

I'd get some 140s and start there with the main.
And yes go with 47.5 pilot jets. If you are racing don't worry about the pilot jets.
Where did you degree the cams at?
Buy stuff from Blowerbike. He'll set you up to go fast as hell.

                  Carb probs

I'll pull the filters and put the 47.5 pilots in, and increase the mains from the 138 DJ's to 150 Mikuni's. I'd love to buy the 38 radials and be done with it but I don't have the cash. Some of you guys probably already noticed I'm having a yard sale in the classifieds right now so I can convert my old GS1000 and not-needed 1100 stuff to new 1100 stuff.
The cams were degreed by Scott at S & K to around 106 apiece I think. To be honest I don't know much about degreeing.

                  Terry,
Are you or someone you know interested in bartering? I've got a NOS system (w/ bottle), an air shifter, an outboard starter, and a GS750 4v motor I'd like to get rid of. The motor has an outboard starter plate on it.

In my opinion the 150 is too rich but it is a good starting point.

                      Main jets

The only set I have laying around at the moment are 145's...may as well throw 'em in and see what happens.

My 1229 motor with 1.5 oversized intake valves and a good street port runs 147.5s on the inner cylinders and 145s on the outer. The plugs have a rich read with these jets and I plan on going down one size on each.

Hmmm...mebbe 145's too much for 1166. Gonna try em anyway. Wonderin why the different sizes on the 1-4 and 2-3 cylinders. Heat?

Middle cylinders run hotter hence the larger mains.

                              drag bikes don't care...
run all the same across the board.
