carb vent tube

i have a 79 gs 1000, somehow i lost one of the carb vent tubes, and for some reason also the tube that i lost when i turn bike off, gas will squirt out of the nipple that the tube is gone from....anyone know whats going on, i had to shut off the gas at the side of my tank to not lose all my gas

Is it the #2 carb (2nd one in from the left)? That's where the fuel enters from the tank, and is the most common one to have trouble with the float valve sealing. Tap on the carb bowl with the end of a screwdriver or a wooden mallet, see if it frees up the stuck float or float valve. Turn the fuel supply valve to on and see if the problem is solved while tapping on the bowl. The tube from the vent doesn't matter other than it drains the fuel away from the engine when this happens.

#3 carb then. Anyway, it sounds like you have a stuck float or float valve. Tap on the bowl and see if it frees it and stops the flow of fuel. It should, but if it doesn't you'll have to remove the rack of carbs to remove the bowl and fix whatever is causing it to stick. You might also at that time want to buy an o-ring kit from cycleorings.com and do a complete carb cleaning and overhaul as per the instructions on the bikecliff site so the problem is alleviated.
If you remove the rack of carbs, remove the drain plugs and drain the fuel out of them before turning them over to remove float bowls.

Others here gave you good advice.
You're talking about the floatbowl fuel overflow line. Not a vent tube (of which there are 2 floatbowl vent lines mounted higher on the carbs).
I just mention this because the correct terminology helps avoid confusion.
