I found a gauge dash unit on ebay for really really cheap. However I have a tank without the sending unit. Is it worth my time to hunt down a sending unit to put in the tank? Or is the gauge basically useless?

adding a fuel gauge
Is it worth while to add a fuel gauge to my '79 GS850?

I like having a fuel gauge but it's not necessary as long as you have a trip meter.Ed

You would be better off also finding a tank that already has the mount for the gauge, if not the sending unit, too.
In your case, look for '80 or '81 850G or 1000G.
The '82 and newer mount differently.
EDIT: why doesn't your bike have a gauge? The parts fiche shows one in the bottom of the tach.
EDIT #2: The sending unit is there, too:

my tank has the drain and drain tube, so I am figuring it probally has a plate installed instead of a sending unit

This is the unit I just bought, mine look identical minus the gauge.
My tank has the sending unit, but someone cut the wire. So when my new dash comes with the sending unit, a gas gauge I shall have.
My wiring diagram shows a fuel guage regulator, hoping that is in the dash unit.Last edited by Guest; 10-02-2010, 12:19 AM.

The voltage regulator is built into the gauge. I don't understand how it works but it's there.Ed

It's not the "regular" voltage regulator that controls the charging voltage, but yes, there is a regulator in there.
The fuel gauge works off of 7 volts or so.
