    1980 GS1000 Petcock Instructions

I'm not sure how it is supposed to work.

    Which way is Prime?

    Which way is On?

Will an alternate petcock fit on the tank?

Z1 has one that fits, it is a normal ON _ OFF _ PRI vacuum petcock.
It's a little smaller that the old Suzuki thing so it doesn't interfere with the carburetor.

Z1 Enterprises specializes in quality Motorcycle parts for Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha Classic Japanese motorcycles from the 1970's and 1980's.

      1980 gs1000e vac. petcock

hi i think it is vertical,,, but its easy too see ,,,,if you remove the fuel linethat goes from petcock to carbys,, and gently place a thin blade screw driver in the slot on the side of petcock and twist it ,,on prime fuel will rush out,, on mormal you will have too gently suck on the end of the fuel line causing a vacume and fuel will flow thru.. hope this helps so far i,ve had no dramas with my vac. petcock at all.. but if you don,t like them a pingel will go on with a master plate .. regards david

Except with this particular 1980 petcock, PRI won't flow fuel until vacuum is applied to the diaphragm. The only difference in PRI is that the fuel will continue to flow after the vacuum is removed, were on ON the fuel shuts off when the vacuum is removed.

They really do suck, don't know what Suzuki was thinking.

Hog, that's on the '80 GL, but not on the G.

The rubber and plastic parts of the petcock go bad just like all the other rubber and plastic parts on these things. Replacing seems to me to be just about as warranted as dipping the carbs on a new find. At least take them apart and clean/inspect.

Most of the large '80 models are 50mm but I'm pretty sure the GS1000G is 44mm. (The "E" is 50mm, for sure.) It always pays to double check!!

I should have said, this is for my '78 E, which wears an '80 E tank. It is the one without a lever on it.

                        Hi,

Oh boy, "that" 1980 petcock. It seems like those are just about as much fun as those dual-throated CV carbs.

I guess there's always Pingel. Just don't forget to turn it off.

                        Thank you for your indulgence,

The 1980 petcock has a little embedded check valve which can't be serviced. Rebuilding GS petcocks is always a gamble but next to impossible on the leverless model. Good news is these petcocks are cheaper than some of the others. The version Z1 used to sell was identical to OE, and I suspect the version Georgefix sells on ebay is the same... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1980-...item2eb0c36c60

Well, I was only wanting to replace it because I don't like it. It seems to work, although it doesn't prime very well.

The replacement I bought is incorrect for that bike, but I have 3 1000G's and 2 850G's, my younger brother has a 1000G and a 850G, my older brother has an 1100G, his son has an 1100E, and one of my other nephews has an 850G, all of which they got from me.

We will have a use for the petcock... I have had to replace several of mine so far...

You can rebuild them Ed. Nobody sells the O ring as part of a rebuild kit but it's a common size. The tricky bit is the little oval rubber on the end of the bit that you turn with a screwdriver - these rubbers go hard, get dented and don't seal. Again nobody sell these and you have to make your own; this is very fiddly as it's a tiny piece - refusing to be beaten I've managed it but only on the 20th attempt (you might do better if you've got very good eyes and a very steady pair of hands).

It is much easier and quicker to just buy a new one though.
