' 79 GS 1000 Carb needle 'O' rings correct position?'

Hi all, my second post on this amazing forum site. I'm going through my 79 GS 1000 which i recently got and got a few things to do as always happens! Ok so today's question is about the 'o' rings that go onto the 'adjustment needles' that are underneath the carb pointing upwards not the adj needles that are found on the side of the carb! My terminology probably is a little shaky but i'll try-Ok so on the giant pic below (cos i really struggle with posting pics!) The adjustment needle normally has one o ring only. I think The correct position for the o ring should be the position on the left at the end of the threads. I have put on a 2nd o ring on the right end of the 'needle' to be able to ask if this might be the correct position for the o ring not forgetting that there is the spring that sits on the pointed end!? The reason i ask is that when i stripped the carbs these o rings were all over the place on the different needles.! I think these are the needles that are factory set and you shouldn't fool with but they all looked so f'd up i thought i had better do something! Sooooo--does the o ring sit on the left or right side of the threads please?--Thanks as always

The one in the groove on the left is correct.

while looking at your photo (which yes the oring fits in the groove on the left closer to the screw end) I noticed that the tip of your needle is slightely dull.. These needles (out of a VM carb i assume since its a '79) are generally sharper. I just took my carbs apart this week and the tip of my "Pilot Fuel Screw" (this is the one you are refering to) was broken off in the carburetor. You should definently check this before reassembly as it could result in poor performance. If the tip isnt stuck in the carburetor, try the needle in the carb and see how it runs. It may need more adjustment. If performance is bad then you should replace this pilot fuel screw. This all could just be precautionary but i would rather catch this sort of problem before i reassemble ALL my carbs and throw them back on the bike! Hope this helps!!
