carbs
I have a 78 gs1000 and I am looking for some carbs. It didn't come with any and since i had to get some I was wondering what my options where. I have heard about some 36mm (slingshot) carbs from a gsxr1100 but i am not sure what year or model. Any info would be great.

Unless your engine is built up with bigger pistons, lumpier cams and freer-flowing exhaust, you don't want to go that much larger than stock carbs.
I think the stock carbs were VM26, so 29mm carbs would be a decent/serious upgrade. Not sure that 36s would work at all.

Knowing what your eventual goal is would help a LOT in determining what carbs to get. If you are going to stick with a basically stock engine, get some stock carbs. You can add a header and pod filters to "wake it up" a bit, and the only thing you will have to change is the jets, the stock carbs will be fine.
However, if you are planning on a big-bore kit and bigger cams, stock carbs will end up choking the engine, so figure out where you want to end up, then we can/will make suggestions how to get there.

I know TKent was selling a bunch of carbs
26mm Mikunis are common and inexpensive
28mm from a Kawasaki will work
29mm smoothbores are rare and expensive ($600-1000) and best suited to a modified motor
36mm are waay too big for your motor1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Thanks Guys. Right now it is going to be stock. It will change down the road i am just not sure when that will be..

Ebay often has carburetors for GSes, too. But try the sections on this forum first.sigpic[Tom]

Octain, it didn't come with any carbs. Guy took them off to clean them and them moved and thinks he may have thrown them away..
Themess, i have a couple feelers out on here but i haven't hard any replies. i would much rather buy something from someone on the board then from ebay..

You want the VM26SS carbs. Ask lots of questions before you buy as we all know an old bank of carbs can have issues. Basic cleaning and inner o-ring replacement is typically needed. Key notes: Hopefully the slides move smoothly and there's no stripped hardware and the pilot fuel and side air screws are in good condition. If not, you may be getting in deeper than you want to.
Also, I suggest replacing the o-rings in the manifolds unless you know they're good (inspect manifolds too). Waste of time to freshen up the carbs and install them into leaking manifolds. Careful removing the manifolds. If they still have the stock Phillips screws you should use a GOOD fitting bit and an impact tool. Many people strip the screw heads by using a poor fitting bit or not hitting correctly. Then replace the screws with Allen heads.And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!
