    carb question

So I took my carbs to my local bike shop who is a good friend of mine and we took apart the carbs together and we found that the floats and the float needles will all need to be replaced and thats not including the couple of bolts that we stripped to take it apart and the new seals so its getting alil pricey, so I wanted to look on ebay for a better set that will have less things to be replaced and weigh my options but I only found a set of 82 gs 1000 carbs at the decent price and wasnt sure if these would even fit to my bike? I know you guys will know if it will fits.

Not certain, but being the same engine, it should.

How much is your friend charging you ? Normally, these carbs can be stripped down, dipped and rebuilt with just new o-rings. The o-rings can be purchased from cycleorings http://www.cycleorings.com/ for about $15, IIRC. I've getting ready to rebuild my third set and that's all they ever needed.

he is only charging me fifty bucks to stripped them down dip them and to rebuild them and all i have to do is get the parts, the best part he is showing me how to do it all so I can do it the next time, but when we started to take them apart we noticed the floats were bad and the needles need to be replaced, the po left gas in the carbs then let it sit for twenty years so the gas messed up the parts.

That's not bad, I guess. You could've done them yourself using this tutorial from the main page of this site.

I forget where to get those needles and such, but, there is a website to order from. Try using the search feature and see what you can find.

Good job getting another on the road.

EDIT :: Here's one place, I'm looking for more. http://www.carbkitscapital.com/carb_...i&model=GS1000

Out of morbid curiosity, what was wrong with floats? Can you post pic?

I will take a pic tomorrow and post it but he told me they need to be replaced. I read somewhere else that these carbs are just as bullet proof as the motor they connect to but I am not a carb person idk why.

The only reason to replace a float is if the adjustment tab has broken off or if it is leaking and no longer buoyant. At least that's the only reason I replace one. If it is just dirty, it can be cleaned.

Did your friend use an impact to remove the screws?
                  Does the floats float?
It's easy to f up these carbs if you don't have experience.
Did you check out the carb rebuilding tutorial from the home page of this site? This will give you all the info you need.
I have lots of spare carb parts. Let me know what you need and I may be able to save you from buying a spare set of carbs. I'll bet you really don't have to unless a carb body is murdered.

The screws I mess up are the stupid phillip head that I was repleceing any way but when I saw the floats they look dirty as hell and yes I read the entire carb rebuild section but I do not feel very comfortable working on them yet but I feel that I could but wanted help. I will go back to the bike shop tomorrow after work and recheck them and take pics

I am also curious to know why he felt the floats should be replaced. I find that quite odd.

well went back to the bike shop and he told me this and that and it was going to to cost x amount of dollars so I took the carbs back with me and said screw that, but when I got home I took all the float bowls off and saw that one float was so gunked up it looked really messed up but I shot it with carb cleaner and it alomst shine up like a new penny so I ordered the o-ring kit from cycleorings.com and went to a local suzuki shop and got the gaskets, then called up a friend up who goes to mmi in daytona and hes coming over with the carb dip and we will tackle it together for free, so thankyou all, I hope to have her purring like a kitty by monday.
