    gas tank

What gas tanks will fit on my 78 GS1000E? I found out today that my tank leaks all around the seam. I want to find another or a new one, I don't care if it has the stripe indent on it, but would like to keep the 5gal size.

GS1000 (chain drive) from 1978 - 1980 will fit, other than the '79 GS1000L. The 1980 tank takes the odd ball leverless petcock with 50mm spacing.

Tanks for these bikes are getting really expensive. You might want to have yours fixed up - not cheap, but no tank for your bike will be cheap.

leaking along seam of tank yuk!!!!!

hi guys i,ve been there with leaking seams on the left side and around the seat section... its still in my shed as a sample of swiss cheese .. pin holes every where... if you know a good sheet metal worker they could actually reseam it without too many dramas.. and tig it no oxy ... to much heat i made a mistake getting an old boiler maker aged 75 retired ,,to reseam the tank ,, big mistake .. its like asking a boiler maker to fix your swiss watch.. but a good sheety should have no problems ... those tanks are only .75 of a mil.. as thin as ...regards david

may sound like a fairy tale to some, but i have tig welded my 78 750 tank. Ground down the high spots on the welds and then just for good measure i silver soldered over top of the repair. I then filled it with water and set it on a piece of cardboard to see if it weeped over night. Was dry as a bone next morning so i then did the tank sealer treatment. I would like a few pics of said leaking tanks PMed to me if possible..i may be interested in getting one for a spare for my 78 1000 C..I can repair almost anything.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

              I feel your frustration.
I had a '78 GS1000E that I got with about 500 miles on it, several years later it developed a leak. I tried to seal it and that didn't work, so I ended up putting a '79 OEM tank on it and painted the tail piece to match. But you could get new tanks back in '82 for about $200, painted.
GS1000E tanks are fairly hard to come by now, but they do occaisionally pop up on E-bay and they usually don't go very cheap. Unless you can repair your tank, that probably going to be your best bet in getting one.

Here's the last one I saw on E-bay and it went for $227.50!
I usually post GS1000 tanks on parts for sale here when I see them,
don't give up, one will eventually turn up.

So can someone clairify for me, a 79 tank will work with the current petcock or does it need a different one, from what I understand the 80 will work with an 80 petcock? I found a site that was supposed to have an oem tank but it turns out they can't get the tank lol, but they have the petcock. which models were chain drive? I need to know what combinations will work so i can see what they have available. I prefer something that is just bolt up without any mods.
