Need a float pin... anyone know where to get one?
The stupid sucker claimed yet another victim... While trying to tap it back in after a cleaning job, the stupid thing bent on me. Tried to straighten it, but no luck.
Anyone have a spare one laying around or anyone know where I can get one? Any info appreciated. -

Welcome to GSR.
Post up in parts wanted, someone will ship you one. I am sure in a pinch you could make do with any sort of wire or nail that is about the same size.

If it's off a CV I have one.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

Why are you "tapping one in"? They slide very easily. The pins in the CV carbs do have to be pressed the last couple of millimeters, I use my ChannelLock pliers for that. Have never bent a pin or broken a post doing that.sigpic

waterman, I was thinking about getting a pin of equal dimension and putting it in there. I'm just not sure if it would stay in the posts like the original pin did.
steve, I think I bent is slightly pulling it out and when time came to put it back in, it wouldn't go in like it should and bent more.... this is my first ever carb rebuilt of any kind and I'm very quickly learning on my own mistakes.Last edited by Guest; 01-24-2011, 11:31 PM.

Just make sure it is not loose enough to rattle around in the holes,
and cut it so it just barely sticks out past the outer edges of the posts.
The float bowl will keep it from sliding out.

I made a float pin once from a piece of brass rod purchased from a hobby shop.
It was a perfect fit -- bring a stock pin with you to match the diameter. As noted above, the sides of the float bowl keep it in place so you don't really need the "nail head" on one side.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Great advice BW ! Thanks ! I looked at the bowl and noticed the same thing. It has a channel where the pin sits in-between. Maybe that's an option I can play around with.

10 guage copper house electrical wire is a nice snug fit. Most hardware stores will sell it by the foot.

I usually sand/file down the larger diameter portion of the pin under the 'nail head' so the next poor somebiotch can remove the pins easier and not break the posts! there's no need for the pins to be that tight. like the others have said, the bowl will prevent them from coming out anyway.
