why got to the bother of buying bolts, sawing the heads off, fitting them as studs, buying washers and more nuts when you can just use standard allen bolts with lock washers and standard washers with a bit of copper grease? seems like a waste of time effort and money to me1978 GS1085.
Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

McMaster Carr has 8mm SS studs. Just do a product search. Im not sure how long youd want them. But seems youre looking at roughly $2 per stud in 18-8 and about $10 per in 316

Only need one extra nut to get them in.Pop my new gaskets in and ready for the pipe.

Dont have 4-1 yet, but will next week. I'll do it then.
Thanks.
BTW, I like the set screw idea, and that is probably what I'll use. Thanks for the tips!

Per the 1000G parts book on Bkie Cliff's site, the bolts on a 1000G are 45mm. I have put stainless alens on 2 1000G's using 45mm. I assumed that an 850G was the same, but... When I changed out the rusty exhaust system on my 850G last week with a clean one sourced from this site, the 45's were too long. I ended up going and buying a set of 40's for it.
I recently bought from these guys, because they stocked sizes I could not source locally at Ace or True Value: http://dmpfasteners.com/shop/
They were reasonable compared to local hardware stores, and shipped quickly. They were the only place I found a stainless acorn nut for the top fork crown bolt.
Assuming that the correct bolt length is 40mm, I would add 8mm for the nut thickness, plus another 3 mm for castle nut, and round up to the next 5mm, or 55mm.
Personally, I like the look of the allen screws, and don't want to see any threads sticking out past the nuts on the exhaust flange bolts. You could go with Acorn nuts, but you have to get the length and thread engagement pretty close on the studs if you do.
I'll be changing out my fork crown bolts on the 1000G here in Tillamook today with stainless allens and acorns from DMP on top, and stainless allens from the Tillamook Farmers Co-op store on the lower crown.
New stainless fasteners cleans up the bike quite a bit, but the money really adds up little by little.Last edited by 850 Combat; 02-12-2011, 11:52 AM.sigpic Too old, too many bikes, too many cars, too many things
