finally got some test rides in
ok so after winter maintance i got ride a few times. i have a 80 850L stock bike except for mystery exhaust. rebuilt carbs via bike cliff site instructions using robert barr o-rings. and valves adjusted in spec. so after cruising at around 55 or so bike seems to start losing power. like its running out of gas of flooding dont know which. rode for about a minute at 70 and bike totally lost power had to gear down to keep it running on the shoulder. it wsa like it was running on two or three cylinders. fethered the throttle and eventually came back. so i dont know where to start looking for what i missed or did wrong. i did put a lawn and garden in-line fuel filter on. would this restrict fuel flow? any help appreciated thanks.Tags: None

Hi,
Check that the gas cap is venting properly. It can be taken apart and cleaned. Also check that the little hole in the filler neck of the gas tank is clear.
Is the float height set properly? Did you check the float bowl gaskets for the proper punch-out configuration? Not all float bowl gaskets are the same. I think this is for the #2 carb.
If you have to use an inline filter then perhaps your gas tank is not a clean as it should be. If everything is clean then an inline filter is unnecessary.

i was using the inline filter as a precaution after all my carb disassemble and cleaning. but if its not necessary then i will take it off. i never noticed that hole in the filler cap either just had the tank painted so i will check that also. float height? i did my best to get it right by diagrams 2mm if i remember right. ill start with the easiest things first. i dread opening the carbs up again.

Hi,
Check your petcock for proper operation too. Make sure there are no kinks or loops in the fuel or vacuum lines. Keep us informed.

ok guys i removed the in line filter and no change. the bike did the same thing at the same spot in the road. just curious could this be related to mixture setting at all? i tried my best to get the highest RPM method as describe on basscliff site. im really proud of this bike and the work i have done so far and i want to be able to ride faster than 45 mph so any help would be great. i guess my next step is to pull the carbs back off and recheck what? also could it be coils or plug wires i think they are original and have some cracking on the wires. Thanks Guys

I would investigate ignition first. Your bike needs 3 things: Air, fuel and spark. Since you have already worked in the first 2, I would look at the 3rd. There is a way to replace the spark plug wires, and the suppression caps are readily available. Or the dyna wire set is available from vendors such as Z1.

i wanted to put new wires and caps on and found out the wires were made into the coils. new dyna green coils and wires and caps is like 150 bucks that i don t really have. also the bike starts and idles and runs great until i get up to about 55 for a few minutes then starts bogging down

Hi,
I suppose it's possible that the igniter is thermally intermittent. But do all the simple stuff first, plugs, plug caps, etc. Just in case, check the electrical page on my website for lots of ignition troubleshooting tips.
Someone should also say that sometimes it takes two or three tries to properly clean the carbs.

called my local suzuki shop and described the problem at hand and he suggested an air leak somewhere that shows up at higher speeds.could this be my problem? i will check my bike for all possible leaks again
