    Just pulled off my exhaust

So today after school I decided to pull off the exhaust in an attempt to clean them up and maybe get a nice shine on them. About 2 to 3 hours later I am somewhat content with my work and about to put them back on and decide to look down inside to where the valves are to notice a somewhat thick black powdery coat on everything.

Is this normal, like an emissions thing, or is it just build up from many years of operation?

is there a recommended product out there to help clean this out? Iv heard about some fuel system cleaners from Penzoil and Lucas that are supposed to clean the valves and then there is that 'nitrogen fuel' stuff that Shell stations charge up the rear for that are supposed to help clean the valves.

Sorry if it seems like I am rambling on, I kinda have a tendency to over think things.

That black layer is normal. Don't worry about it.
