    1983 GS850G Exhaust Question

First of all, I am new to the forum. So 'Hello'!

I just purchased my first ever bike (1983 GS850G) and I was wondering how I could make the exhaust louder. Everything as the exhaust system goes is stock. I was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction to making my exhaust louder. I don't want anything too crazy but something a little beefier would be great. I know there are universal baffles out there I could get but I don't have anyone to ask for their opinion on those. Also, are there complete mufflers I could buy that could help me out instead?

    Thanks for the time guys.

When you find your "louder" system, please let me know. I might be interested in your nice quiet system.

    Where are you?

I'll let the other guys start warning you about how you are going to have to re-jet the carbs and all for your new exhaust, I just want the quiet pipes.

Ontario, Canada. The carbs were just re-jetted by the guy who had the bike before me.

OK, shipping would definitely be a killer for the pipes.

Why was the bike re-jetted if it has a stock exhaust? Do you have pod filters on the intake? You would have to re-jet again for the louder exhaust.

          .

Yeah probably too pricey lol. I'm not sure why it was re-jetted, but I can ask the guy Sunday when I go pick it up. I would imagine it was just something he was doing out of maintenance? He had new 4-1 pipes put on recently so maybe that was part of the process. He really seems to be the kind of guy that is passionate about bikes and keeps a close eye on the up keep of them. Not sure about the pod filters either, but I don't believe so.

So, which is it, do you have a 4-into-1 pipe or do you have stock pipes?

Another statement has me puzzled, too:

It's very easy to tell if you have pod filters.
Look on the side of the carbs that is away from the engine.
Do you see individual filters or a large box with chrome caps on the end?

              Greetings and Salutations!!

              Hi Mr. Gnomeboy,

You could always chop off the exhaust right behind the headers and run straight pipes.

Or buy a new aftermarket 4-n-1 exhaust. You'll find a short list of new exhaust vendors below in your "mega-welcome".

The 850 is not supposed to be loud. It's just not that kind of machine. It's a stately beast that excels at nothing but does everything well. Now let me dump a TON of information on you (click the links below) and share some GS lovin'.

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

If there's anything you'd like to know about the Suzuki GS model bikes, and most others actually, you've come to the right place. There's a lot of knowledge and experience here in the community. Come on in and let me say "HOoooowwwDY!"....

Here is your very own magical, mystical, mythical, mind-expanding "mega-welcome". Please take notice of the "Top 10 Common Issues", "Top 15 Tips For GS Happiness", the Carb Rebuild Series, and the Stator Papers. All of these issues must be addressed in order to have a safe and reliable machine. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

I suppose there are new 4-into-1 pipes, so that part is not stock. After that though, the muffler is stock. I don't know much about bikes so it's a little guess work on my part, sorry.

I didn't notice. I don't have the bike just yet, and didn't know enough to look I suppose.

Thanks for the welcome and info BassCliff!!

I've never heard a 4:1 pipe that was even remotely quiet, so why in the heck are you looking to make it louder still?

Harley disease. It's tragic when it infects a GS-er.
