    Basic Carb Stuff

    I am rebuilding my carbs on my 81 850. I have read most everything on the BWRingers and BikeCliffs sites, but I still have a question.

    When I opened up the carbs, the float measurement was 23mm from the carb body to the top part of the float (where the metal part of the float attaches to the float body). From everything I have read, it should be 22mm to the first notch right below where the float attaches to the pivot (which is about 20mm as currently measured). The bike seemed to run OK before, so before I go and change all the float heights, I'd like to get a final sanity check.

    Based on what I read and from what I remember being told, it should be about 22.4mm which would probably be about what you have.

      My question is from what point is the float to be measured? From the very top of the float or from the first notch (as you look at the float)? The descriptions look like it is supposed to be from the first notch. If that is the case, my floats need to be adjusted.

        Floats get measured from the base of the carby where the bowl attaches(no gasket) and the top of the float. OR a quick check is to lay them on there side and see if the floats are all level/straight with the body.

            Thank you. I was afraid that the floats needed to be adjusted, now I know. I think the PO had them adjusted so the very top of the float was at the required distance.

            Surprisingly, the bike never seemed to have any trouble. Of course, I was only getting about 30 mpg, so there were a bunch of issues that need to be fixed...

              Just did mine but now.... do we do them with the floats lying upon the needles bottom side up or bottom side to the right or left with the float tab just touching the needle. I did mine with the floats ontop of the needle, bottom side up.
