    Idle screw

    Hello

    GS750 1977
A simple question is it possible to break the idle screw under the carbs, by which i mean how is it connected to the carbs, will it just turn around and around as mine doesnt seem to stop at any fixed point

    thanks

It wouldn't stop until the throttle cable holder reached the top of its range

    The real question is

Does turning the idle screw raise the throttle cable holder?

    If not, something is stripped

Turning it in (clockwise) will eventually reach the end of the threads and bind up, forcing a stop.

Turning it out (anti-clockwise) will eventually reach the end of the threads and it will fall into your hand.

It takes several turns (20-30?) to go from one extreme to the other.

Sorry to sound dense what do you mean by throttle cable holder?

Are they connected? as im turning the big bolt between the carbs

        toby

The end of the idle screw pushes against a plate where the throttle cable hooks into. That's what adjusts the idle.

Thanks i didnt know as the bolts deep under the carbs, i thought it just open and closed some air passage, still dont understand how it effects the throttle cable does it open the throttle to increase idle and wouldnt that effect the vacuum working on the fuel when starting?

Ive screwed it clockwise untill its fully tightened which was a good 15 rotations presumably fully tightened would be at the highest idle which if connected to the throttle might effect the bikes starting?

            thanks

Turning the screw for highest idle, as you have, will not "effect" starting, but it will definitely "affect" it, but in a very negative way.

Turning the idle screw all the way will open the throttle too much for the "choke" to do anything, so you are just chasing your tail.

If you look at the carbs, you can see where the idle speed adjustment screw pushes on a plate that is attached to the pulley on which the cable pulls. Back the screw out until you don't see any more movement of the pulley, then turn it back in one or two turns. Apply full "choke" and try again. Do NOT turn the throttle to "help" start the engine. If it does not start by using the "choke", you have other problems that need to be addressed first.

Well, then, YOU, of all people, should know ENGLISH.

                  Over here, we speak "Amurrican".
