    Jet sizes and carb settings..

    Hi all,

I`m sorry if this has been covered before but I have searched and can`t find an answer to my question.

I have just done a Saxon Engineering bolt on monoshock conversion to my `79 GS1000S. Unfortunately, I have had to move the battery and remove the airbox as there is no longer space to fit it. I am now running pod filters on the carbs. Obviously they need rejetting and I was wondering if anyone had run pods on their bike and could point me to the right ball park for jet sizes and settings. I was very reluctant to lose the standard airbox as the bike pulled like a train cleanly through the rev range.

The bike is also running a Harris Works Performance 4-1 system. With the stock airbox, standard 15/95 jets and the pilot air screws turned out 1 3/4 -2 turns it ran like a mad thing. Now, it bogs down higher up the rev range.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Tim

    Greetings and Salutations!!

    Hi Mr. turbo_billy,

Hmmm, a search wouldn't turn up any information? I answered this question just yesterday. There are countless posts concerning this issue. Anyway...

Place your 4 cylinder GS engine, drivetrain or clutch related questions in this forum.

Note that you have VM carbs and the remarks pertaining to the "idle mixture screw" on CV carbs in the post above does not apply to your bike. With your VM carbs, normally you would start with the fuel screw about 3/4 to 7/8 turn out, the air screw about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns out, and adjust from there. You may need to open up the fuel screws even more with the increase air flow.

You'll also find carb and jetting information on my little website. I have notes HERE and HERE and HERE. To help get you started in the right direction, let me share some GS lovin'.

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Get standard K&N Pods or the equivalent (e.g. APE has some) NO EMGO's

      Get a Dyno jet kit.

Look for the tuning guide at Factory pro. It has been mentioned a million times. There is another guy here who was doing similar in the last couple of weeks. I though we were having a popularity poll instead of how to set up a box stock 1100E with pods and 4:1.

Not sure he will ever get it to run right.

        Hey BassCliff,

Thanks for the reply and welcome. I have been lurking on the site on and off for a while now but evidently this was my first actual post and as such I apologise for not introducing myself properly.

I have already come across your sets of notes and have them saved in my favourites. As per my original post, I really didn`t want to lose the airbox as the bike ran so well with the "stock" settings. All I was looking for was someone who had done this "mod" to give me an idea of the rejetting I should be looking at. I appreciate that I will still need to do a little fine tuning afterwards.

As for the bike itself, here are a couple of pics of it before the conversion.

This is the 4th GS1000 that I have owned over the years and this one is definitely a keeper.

        Thanks again.

        Regards

        Tim

          Hi again,

Just as a closer, the bike is now running as sweet as ever. 15 pilots, 120 mains, air screws 1 3/4 - 2 turns out.

          Thanks for your input.

          Regards

          Tim

Nice bike! I sure wouldn't have messed with anything on it.

New pics? Where did you put the battery?

I will add some better pictures when I take a proper camera to the workshop. I remade the battery tray so it locates on its original mounts but is raised up to fill the space left by the air filter box.
You can just see the battery box behind the space for the carbs.
