Got my carbs all cleaned out and orings replace and starts up and idles good, but if I roll on the throttle to quickly while changing gear from 3rd to 4th the bike just dies. No sputtering or bogging down it just dies. It doesn't do it if I just push the throttle slowly changing gears , but does it when I'm pushing the throttle to quickly. Almost forgot to say its a 1985 GS550L... Need help....Thanks

Hi everyone,
Got my carbs all cleaned out and orings replace and starts up and idles good, but if I roll on the throttle to quickly while changing gear from 3rd to 4th the bike just dies. Air/fuel
Check your plugs and adjust your air screws accordingly. What you're describing is most likely an incorrect air/fuel ratio. I feel sure you're getting plenty of gas...but the air ratio has to be right, too; not too much nor too little.
The air screw settings seem trite when you're adjusting them but they can be very important. I very much doubt you have much of a problem. Take a look at your plugs!!Last edited by chuckycheese; 03-26-2011, 07:19 PM.1980 GS1100E....Number 15!

I do hope you are letiing the bike warm for at least 3 minutes.
Even in hot summer days these like to be warm before driving off.
A lot of high displacement guys will say otherwise but a small engine with a small bit of caloric conversion nedds more time to warm up.
How many mins are you lketting this get hot. Temper you answer with the local ambient temps.

Sounds lean on the needle jets. An air leak from the air box can mimic this as well as an aftermarket air filter. That’s if you carbs are truly clean. You could raise the jet needles and/or check your air box and filter.

Hi,
Could the vibration in that situation be causing some kind of loose connection to open up and kill the ignition?
Otherwise, I agree with the guys above. Make sure the air intake system is tight. I had to replace ALL of the intake boots AND clamps when I put my bike back together. Are the carbs really clean, like this? Did you accidentally over-oil the air filter? What do the plugs look like? When it happens again, just pull in the clutch and hit the kill switch. Pull off to the side of the road and yank out a spark plug.
