    79 GS850 VM Cold Start

Hey guys Last winter I went through my VM Carbs
Bike runs absolutely perfect except #2 plug fouls almost every time when choked from a cold start. I really have to work hard to get it going, sometimes clean out the combustion chamber or replace the plug.

Once she's warm, everything is great. Any obvious things i can check without taking everything apart again? She runs so good after I get her going, I dont want to do it again.

Could it be a choke problem?? Easy to check out??
Are BassCliff's links still working?? Could not get them to work.

    Hi,

Yes, everything on my site is still working. For the larger PDF files you may have to right-click and "Save as..." to download the file to your hard drive. Then you can open it with your favorite PDF reader. The most common issues that cause your symptoms are dirty carbs (sticky floats? leaking float valve seats?) and valves that need adjustment (they're too tight).

Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'.

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

If there's anything you'd like to know about the Suzuki GS model bikes, and most others actually, you've come to the right place. There's a lot of knowledge and experience here in the community. Come on in and let me say "HOoooowwwDY!"....

Here is your very own magical, mystical, mythical, mind-expanding "mega-welcome". Please take notice of the "Top 10 Common Issues", "Top 15 Tips For GS Happiness", the Carb Rebuild Series, and the Stator Papers. All of these tasks must be addressed in order to have a safe, reliable machine. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

Please click here for your mega-welcome, chock full of tips, suggestions, links to vendors, and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website where I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community. Don't forget, we like pictures! Not you, your bike!

Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

Great Site! I was a member years ago. I will be checking those valve clearances pronto. My bike has 16K original, pictures to come.

I kind of thought so. Well then, welcome back!

You'll find lots of GS850G goodness on my website. I try to document everything I do to my bike so that others can get a better idea of how to work on theirs.

        Thank you for your indulgence,

        BassCliff

Could be a blockage in the air passage to the enricher circuit (choke) in the #2 carburetor, so that when it is on, only fuel is pulled in, not a proper fuel/air mixture. As it runs properly on choke on the other cylinders, a lot of unburnt fuel would be accumulating in that one.

Need a good mechanic in Oregon??

Did I mention, by the way, that I love my bike? Smooth as glass. Had her up to 100MPH. If anyone in the Mid Willamette Valley is looking for a good mechanic, I know one: Second Chance Cycles in Aumsville, OR. Mark 503-383-8540

personally i think the simplest answer is the best. give it a turn or half in and see what happens.

on my 850 when cold starting i dont even use full choke ever. else it revs insanely high. it starts super easy, the carbs are all stock and only 2 turns out give or take.

i love the back and forth
