    fluffing on pick up

Right guys, help please, just bought my mint gs650gt and it is hesitant and missing from low to mid range, once it get spinning it shoots off ok, also when you blip the throttle its missing too and dosent have that instant rasp that i expected, does this sound like a carb issue to you or timing, it has a set of new plugs in, but has been off the road for 7 months , any help really appreciated. jon

    Hi,

Yes, the carbs need a proper cleaning. Have you addressed all of the maintenance items in your "mega-welcome"? Your bike may look mint but all of the rubber, electrical connections, etc, are 30 years old. Everything needs to be checked.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

Ok, don't tell anyone I said this as it's against all the GS 'rules' (and it is bad advice). But as we've got a bit of sunshine and you might want to take advantage of it and get some miles under your belt it's worth slinging some Redex in the tank and running for a few miles.

When it starts raining, or if the Redex doesn't help, the carbs will reward a strip down and proper clean / new rubbers etc.

          Hi,

Yes, a couple of good doses of you favorite carb cleaner in the fuel might help. Good luck. If not, well, you know what to do.

          Thank you for your indulgence,

Going to take her for a few miles tommorow and wil have fresh fual and redexin her , so hopefull y it,ll do something, i fired her up tonight in the workshop from cold and it started first time straight away and settled down nicely, but as i said before slightly wooly on the pickup, could be pilot jets slightly gummed, or do you think the advance / retard unit is sticking?

When I first got my bike last year I made a point to clean the carbs, adjust the valves, change all the fluids and regular tune-up stuff too. I did all of this before really riding it a lot. I also did an air-box refurbishment from BassCliff's website recently.

The carbs were dirty. It still ran OK like yours, but I knew a good cleaning would pay off. It makes a lot of difference. Did you do the maintenance stuff to it?

Before I forget, I have an 83' 850L. Look at my signature.

Those pilot jets clog real easy if it sits- try running it hard and see what happens, you might get lucky. Lots of downhills with throttle snapped closed might create some turmoil!

It'll be your carbs almost certainly - advance / retard mechanism is very reliable. Mind, don't forget to check the valve clearances.

I havent had chance yet to get out on the gt, but as soon as the insurance is through and taxed I,ll be putting some miles on and running fresh fuel and redex, hopefully that,ll help and then strip down the carbs in the winter layup

Uppadte !! changed the oil and filter tonight and also drained the oil and renewed to gear oil in the rear hub, took her for a ride and its really hesitant through the rev range and will not rev out cleanly at all, its like its missing and holding back, took the plugs out on return and 3 were looking leanish and one was darker, the one that was dark was no 3 from the right viewed from the seat, also the baffle plates on the end of the right silencer are darker i.e sootier than the left bank, was going to paignton bike show this weekend but its a no goer now with it like this, is there an easy way to balance the carbs in situ ? cheers jon

Well it was worth trying. Your problems won't be solved by a balance, you're going to have to pop them off and give them a really good clean. Follow the carb rebuild tutorial (I think the tutorial is for carbs off an 850 but they're 'the same thing') and strip them down completely and clean them completely.

                          Rain due tomorrow anyway.....

Oh, and check all the O rings.

Third carb from the right is two, if I understand your post correctly. Rich on two can be a sign of fuel in the vacuum line from the petcock, which indicates a bad petcock. I have not experienced this particular failure mode myself.

You should verify that there is no fuel in the petcock vacuum line.

That said, you will more than likely also end up cleaning the carbs to get rid of the part throttle lean condition eventually.
