Carb O-rings

    Carb O-rings

    I needed new o-rings for my carbs on my '80 750 but didnt want to wait for them if I ordered them. I went to homedepot and they sell them in packs of 10 for under $3.00. Its a size 5 accoarding to the chart at the one I was at. Im not sure if the gas will break them down but so far so good.

    The ones you installed are not gas proof and will leave you stranded.

      I figured the fuel would break them down and I'm not done with the carbs so its not a permanent fix I just want to ride around town for a week to see if I need to order anything else with them.

        Hi Mr. wayfast73,

        Yes, Robert Barr (http://cycleorings.com) has done an excellent job putting together O-ring kits for our bikes. He sells them cheap and delivers promptly. His kit includes ALL of the O-rings. Most of the the time the O-ring under the idle mixture screw is missed. Do your carbs right and they won't let you down. Pay close attention to the following:

          The problem is not usually the material (most o-rings are Buna-N, which is the correct material, although you never know for sure with the Home Desperate o-rings...), it's the sizing.

          Robert Barr supplies the correct metric o-rings in the correct material from a high-quality supplier.

          The ones from home stores are sized in inches. Although there may be accidental overlap here and there, this is mostly an exercise in frustration, especially in the smaller sizes, where nearly invisible clearances make a difference. Hardware store o-rings are also of unknown material and quality.

          Gasoline is an intensely flammable substance and the carbs are only a few inches from your crotch. I simply cannot understand the very common and apparently very powerful urge to cut corners when it comes to carbs, fuel lines, and petcocks.

            First off - I'm not recommending this; but put a set of metric orings from a Pep boys value set back in '98 or '99 in my Honda cb750. Same thing - Temporary fix to get me through the weekend or week or Summer or next 12 years.
            Fast forward to this spring and they just started dripping on me - so I replaced them with some nitrile ones earlier this week.

            - Currently presiding over a 1970 T500
