    1982 GS850 intake boots

    Hello, I just joined here, great site!
    I recently purchased a 82 GS850L, I'm trying to locate a good source for a set of carb intake boots, The ones on my bike have air leaks, although the boots have no cracks, the coating on the metal parts are flaking off, but spraying a shot of starting fluid on the boots revs the motor up, not good. The bike idles poorly and bogs at around 3500 rpm.

    So I need a set of intake boots, thanks for any help!

    Heres a pic of the intake boots, the rubber is in great shape, but the leaks are where the coating flaked from the metal. maybe they can be repaired with an epoxy?

      Tom - you need new ones (don't try and repair them - many have been down that path before and failed).

      Put you country / county in your signature so folk can see where you are. I could recommend where to buy but it might be the wrong continent!

            Part Shark has good prices. The O-rings behind those boots need to be replaced at the same time (they are epic leakers).

                  Good that you got parts on order.

                  Yah, those intake boots look like they should be replaced.

                  BUt I suspect your air leak maybe from the o-rings as much as the boots themselves.

                  You order new orings? If not, look/search for Robert Barr Cycle Orings.

                  In the effort to remove those screws you will probably destroy two or three of them (well, I did, anyway). Did you order replacement set of screws? If not, again, look/search for Robert Barr Cycle Orings. He sells kits of replacement allen cap bolts and washers.

                  You will enjoy a new set of intake boots also because a new soft set make reinstalling the carbs so much easier.

                    Yes and yes, ordered new O rings too, and I had to slot cut two of the screws to get them off, all boots are off the manifold now. I'll replace the screws with allens. I also just got done doing a complete carb disassembly and cleaning, carbs were in very good shape with no issues other than a good cleaning, gotta love the ease of these carbs, I have done others like these in the past and always find the inline setups easier than other bikes.

                      What is the wire connected to the upper manifold screw on carb#1? Is that there to route a cable?

                        It is to hold the clutch cable. There should also be a clip at the bottom of carb # 1 on the rack for the clutch cable.
