    High Idle

Bike is a 1983 GS550 with siamesed carbs.

Carbs are cleaned. Intake boot o-rings are brand new.
Air box is sealed up and filter is brand new oem.
I am missing a couple of clamps for the boots from the airbox to the carb intake.
The bike idles at 5000 rpm.
Are the missing clamps enough to cause this? I know they need to be replaced but is there more that I should be looking at with an idle this high?

    thanks,
    Jon

Is the idle adjustment knob having any effect on lowering it? 5K sounds awful high for a vacuum leak to me. If you havn't tried already try backing out the idle adjuster.

      Greetings and Salutations!!

      Hi Mr. Drainspider,

Well, any air leak will wreak havoc with carb tuning. The stock setup wants to see a specifically metered air intake. There is a little wiggle room. But any excess can lead to high idle, stumbling, surging, difficulty in synchronizing, etc.

Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'.

Idle idjust knob dropped the idle. Now it only hangs if reved up to about 4000.
        Will fix the clamps etc.
        thanks

HMM ok you need to assure that all intakes have the same vacuum and one side of the carb rack sucking air at a joint past the filter is going to wreak havoc.

Get the clamps. No a zip tie will not work.

Are your cables routed correctly, with enough freeplay?
+1 on the possibility of an air leak, too.

check your choke cables. They could possibly be sticking.

Check the throttle nuts on both ends of the Throttle Cable.
