Can you "repack" a Yoshi muffler?

    Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about picking up a used 4 in 1 pipe with Yoshi muffler for my 1983 GS550ES on-line but, I'm not sure if it is possible to restore the exhaust system properly as indicated by the seller. This is only compatible 4 in 1 I've been able to find around anywhere.
Here is his response to my questions about the quality of the pipe:

"I took a wire wheel to it then wiped it down with acetone. I then spayed on a couple of coats of Rustoleum BBQ black and followed with a heat gun for about thirty minutes. Finish is good, flat black, except for a spot up on the header that came out less flat than the rest. The finish on the Yoshimura has dulled, but there are no dents on it and it has been repacked."

My question is, will this trype of treatment last or will I be peeling flakes of paint off of it after it heats up? Is it possible to "repack" a muffler?
He will "let it go" for $100 plus shipping (which is a small fortune to Canada).

    Here is the link:
Cleaned, repainted, and vintage Yoshimura muffler repacked, not perfect. Located in Little Rock, AR. $150

    Your thoughts would be appreciated,
    Thanks.

Not sure about that particular paint but PJ1 or VHT does last a season.... I just re-paint every time I change the oil.

Once fitted I usually idle the bike for a couple of minutes, shut it off - let it cool a bit, then cycle getting a longer idle each time. If you do it too fast you will definitely have problems on the head pipes. His heat gun treatment will likely help but I'd still be careful with it.

My Yosh doesn't have packing in it if I remember correctly... maybe a different baffle. Mine is on the 1000.

The older aluminum cans Yoshimura produced can be repacked. Sounds like that's what you are getting. Yosh hasn't produced pipes for the GS line since about 1990, maybe even earlier.

The Dremel multi tool does a nice job of roughing up the surface of my old nasty Vance and Hines 4-1. VHT Flame Proof lasts a season up to where the header joins the muffler. I'm going to try your heat gun idea on the muffler. The paint is much more durable where it is cured.
