So I was browsing SOHC4.net (Honda forum, oh noes!) and looking for any wisdom on cheap gas tank rust removal. My tank was questionable at best, and I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on kreem or por if it was a lost cause.
Someone recommended (and had pictures to prove) "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner. Stuff is $1.23 for 28oz at walmart. So I bought 2 bottles and figured I'd try it out.
Let me clarify. I've worked around some really gnarly chemicals in my various lines of work. This stuff is terrifying. When I say to wear PPE and seal your tank 3 times over... I am serious. I had a minor leak from the petcock opening and the cleaner actually began to dissolve my concrete garage floor.
Now that said... it works incredibly well. I threw a handful of screws in with the 2 bottles, sealed everything up pretty well, and played the tank like a maracca. I only let it sit for 30 minutes and ran it full strength, but it cleaned about 80% of the rust out in short order. I'm going to do it again tonight, but I'm going to use 3 quarts and fill the rest of the tank with water and let it sit overnight. I'll report back tomorrow with pictures and the end results.
I will say that the parts that are cleaner, look brand new. I'm not certain the tank doesn't leak as of right now, but for a total investment of less than $7 in cleaner; can't go wrong.
