    1979 GS850GT jet question!

    hi!

    i recently started rebuilding a '79 gs850 and after installing K&N airfilters it quick became obvious i will need to change the fueljets in the carbs...

    does anyone have an idea what the standard fueljet size is for the '79 and which type would i need to get it to run again!

    someone's coming over to help me synchronise the carbs but i need the jets first...

    First of all,


    Next item: the 1979 model is indicated by an "N" after the G, not a "T".

    Next item: if it is, indeed, a '79, it will have the VM-series carbs. Stock main jets on them is 102.5.
    If you are, by chance, talking about an '80 model that was made in '79, it would have the BS-series carbs, stock mains on those are 115.

    We need to know which type of carbs you have and whether you have stock exhaust or an aftermarket pipe before recommending a starting point for your jetting "fun".

      Also, what altitudes do you normally run through?

        If it doesn't have a kick starter, it isn't a 1979. If it isn't a 1979, you are pretty darned sure to need a jet kit with aftermarket needles if you want it to run correctly without an airbox.

        Dynojet is one of the manufacturers. There are numerous threads in this forem about this.

          Clear up the confusion on what year your bike is

          Also, a K&N drop in shouldn't make that much difference

          You carb specs are in the sticky above and in the factory manual available off BassCliff's site
          1978 GS 1000 (since new)

            Greetings and Salutations!!

            Hi Mr. GS850,

            As you can see, we don't quite have enough information to provide the proper advice.

            1) Year model: The 1979 has a kickstart and VM carbs. The '80 and later has no kickstarter and CV carbs.

            2) K&N air filters: Do you have 4 individual pod filters, or did you put a stock replacement K&N air filter in the stock airbox?

            Depending on the maintenance history of the bike, it could need a lot more, or a lot less, work than you have planned. See the links below for the maintenance lists of things to check, clean, repair, replace, inspect, etc.

            Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS850G lovin'.
