They need to be oiled. They don't filter that well as is, but without oil they really won't filter.

I have a K&N in my stock airbox, made sure it is sealed well but the bike runs a wee tad lean, I have gone through the mixture adj but still. I have thought about trying an OE filter to judge the difference.

Errrr... what's wrong with using the K&N cleaning kit and oil?

You can get the kit with a bottle of cleaner and a bottle of K&N oil at any auto parts store. Other kinds of oil (or no oil) won't work nearly as well. As you've found, other brands of filter oil don't work right on K&N filters.
