    kickin my a$%

So I have been trying to get my dads 80 GS550L back in fighting trim. It sat for about 3 yrs since last driven. I removed the carbs and cleaned them as well as possible w/o removing them from the rack. I have done this before with good results. I put it back together and fired the beast up. starts and runs well cold and has good throttle response, it idles acceptably and all 4 pipes are hot. the problem is that if I shut it off it will not restart when hot. The only way to get it to start is to let it cool off or give it a squirt of ether, when it starts it will run fine until shut off again. The bike has a fresh battery(stiil wont charge, another issue I need to deal with), It has 6500 miles on it, and it was running fine and starting well hot or cold when last driven.I have tried to ck past posts but have not found one that sounds like the same problem. I appreciate any help given. Thanks

    First of all,

Believe it or not, you just told us what the problem is.

You have not been around long enough to see us say it to everyone else, so here is your own personal copy.

    THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS.

You may have cleaned them as well as possible without removing them from the rack, but that is NOT as clean as they need to be.

In your other thread (your only other post at this point), you got a "Mega-Welcome" from BassCliff. In there, are links to the PROPER procedure to clean your carbs. You will not be happy until you do that.

Steve speaks the truth. I just broke mine down and the amount of crap that came out was mind blowing. At first glance things looked somewhat fine. But after taking the jets out and putting them up to the light, it becomes apparent just how much stuff is crapping up the works. Get some crab dunk, soak for 24 hrs, fire up the ol air compressor and blow the nooks and crannies out. Make SURE they're clean.
