    Float level driving me nuts

This is on my 82 GS650G.

I'm trying to set my float levels. They are roughly 1/8" off. When I have the carb upside down, I need to move the float up. Well I can get it there, but I have to really bend the tab a lot. Is this normal. I even ordered new needle because 2 out of the 4 seemed weaker to me. So I just got the new one's,,,K&L's,,and they seem weaker yet. It's like the needle's won't support the weight of the float. It's getting pushed down a little. This just does not seem right to me. Surly the tab isn't supposed to be bent this much.

Am I doing something wrong. I'm measuring like the pic in the guide/manual shows. Will this not be as critical when the carb's are turned over right. Please advise. Thanks.

You should have the carbs tilted so the float tab touches the needle's pin, but doesn't push it in. From where to where and how much are you measuring?

I'm measuring from the base of the carb that the gasket touches, to the rounded part,,,or notch of the float. Not the top. I'm setting them at 22.4mm

Those don't seem to bent an inordinate amount to me. Checking float heights that way is all fine and good, but you really need to be checking actual fuel level via the clear tube method. Fuel level is critical to proper tuning. Click the link for explanation of the clear tube method: http://www.kzrider.com/forum/3-carbu...latslides-help

Those tabs look overly bent. Something is wrong.

The following tutorial details all the steps in rebuilding the carbs, including measuring the float height and measuring the fuel level. I suggest you go though this carefully to make sure you have not missed anything.

Well I think I figured it out. According to the tutorial,,, you can't let the neddle get pushed down any. You must hold the float up and take your measurment. I set my measurement with the needle spring pushed down a bit. I bet if I hold the float up, I won't have to bend the tab as much.

Now I just need 4 hand's to accomplish this task. Any tip's. Thanks

I'm starting to believe that if the float needle spring is weak and can't hold up the weight of the float they should be replaced. The needles have a difficult time holding back the fuel as it is, and if the needle is weak I think this can lead to an over filled the bowl. Problem is that the Mikuni needles are expensive and I'm not sure what, if any, aftermarket needles are any good.

Well I just put all new K&L's in there and they seem week to me. I know it won't hold up at least the first float I messed with.

I got a set at Z1, I guess I'll find out if they are any good. Don't know who manufactures them.

That's where I got mine. My particular set came as a 6 pack and is made by K&L.

So once I get the float level set and turn the carb over, will this become a non-issue. Or could it still cause problem's.
