starts but stalls

1980 GS750E. Just finished cleaning and rebuilding carbs. Original jets, replaced all gaskets, orings etc, replaced air mixture screws. Had it running Wednesday, balanced the carbs; with help from Steve (he is visiting my area for a few months) Put the tools away, rode a few blocks to fill the tank. Felt a little hesitant & under powered.

Was planning to do more tweaking today but - With choke pulled, engine cold, it starts, idles at about 2.5K for about 30 seconds. Then drops to about 1K for 15 seconds then stalls (choke still pulled). Started it again, same result.

Status of bike: New boots on both air box and engine. New battery. Coil relay modification. New plugs. All OEM stock; air box, air filter, exhaust.

Did you use aftermarket or OEM float bowl gaskets? There could be differences.

Hey Cliff,
Yes, they are aftermarket, came with kits, but do have that hole. I had already noticed a previous thread where you posted those same pics, so I have already checked that.
Unfortunately, I have no garage and am wrenching on the driveway, and we have thunderstorms today. Hopefully I'll be back at it tomorrow. Keep suggestions comming.

tank cap?

I was just reading some other threads and noticed a discussion about gas tank cap venting and stalling. Where does the cap vent and how would I clean or fix it? If that might be the problem.

Basscliff has pic of vent hole in cap area, but for now just leave cap loose and see it engine behaves differently. Have you made sure that copious amounts of fuel flow flow in prime position of petcock?

simple problem, stupid mistake

Because I was rebuilding the carbs, I decided it was good time to replace the hoses to the petcock. I bought new OEM hoses because nothing aftermarket seemed to fit correctly. The OEM hoses come as a 4 foot length. I had left the fuel line a little long, and planned to trim it when installing the tank. When I put the tank on, it seemed OK; so I left it. Today when I was checking the gas cap, petcock etc., I noticed that the fuel hose had a pinch in it, because it now had no fuel, and it was too long. Trimmed to correct length. Started right up.
