    newbie question about spark plugs

    Hi all,

I am fairly new here. I used to have an account a while back, but it lapsed.

Anyway, I have begun to take apart a 1982 GS650G that I inherited. While taking things apart, I discovered that when I take the spark plug wires off, the tips of the spark plugs remain in the wires. This happens on all 4 plugs. Forgive my ignorance, but is this supposed to be like this, or do I need to fish those tips out of there?

    Thanks,

    J

If you see the threads on the tops of the plugs, ... THAT'S GOOD.

These plugs and wires do not need the threaded piece on the top that cars require.

Thanks Steve. That is exactly it. There are threads on top where it looks like the tip piece should/would be screwed on.

And why have you "begun taking it apart" ? mileage, known history, etc. ? Has it been sitting long?

Tom, See his introduction posting in "owners".

          Jim,

And while you are learning about mo'cycle sparkplugs.
Also learn that the spark plug caps:
          - have resistor in them, and that can fail over time. (not resistor in wire like automotive)
          - are replaceable. Like $5 each. NKG brand Avaialbe at about any mo'cycle shop. Dont need to be Suzuki shop.
          - twist pull off the wire.
          - can be tested with meter (should be 5k ohms). Goes much higher as it fails.
          - is probably the most common ignition failure. And one bad one can certaily make it "run rough" some. Two bad ones and it runs real bad, if at all.

          Again, welcome to GSR.

          Dave
