Travelled 3km...Then the camshaft tensioner exploded...

I thought I had FINALLY gotten out all of the kinks, but it appears that is not at all the case. After travelling only 3km, my bike started to sound horrible so I stopped to investigate.

    I found this...

The spring end has shot of my camshaft tensioner. To make matters worse, my bike is now on the side of the road.

What is to be done? Completely new tensioner?

Please advise, I am trying not to feel defeated.

You need the tensioner spring, wheel, and nut. I might have some parts to help you out if you are in need.

Any time the cam chain looses tension like that damage could result. I'd open the valve cover, check the cam timing, and make sure the valve clearances are okay. If the valve clearances are large, you bent valves.

That would be a huge help, none of the fiches have the parts listed.

......Then I can try to figure out the process of valve clearance adjustment.

Do I need any speciality tools besides a feeler guage?

      Man this can be frustrating.

Checking valves is standard maintenance. Every owner needs to know otherwise their engine will burn up.

Sorry but don't have those parts. Have a complete rebuilt tensioner though if you get stuck.

Since it appears that these parts were never sold separately , I am now in the market for a new cam chain tensioner.

I appreciate your offer, but do to our relative distance I will cross my fingers that my local shop has a reasonable solution.

              Thanks

Okay, so what I should be doing is.

                  (1) Removing the busted chain tensioner
                  (2) Open the case, and checking to see if the cam chain is the correct length when aligned? (i.e timmed?)
(3)Measure the value height to see if they need shimming or replacement?
(4)Reinstall a new cam chain tensioner?

No it be 2,1,4,3 Dont turn the engine over untill you have sorted the tensioner and checked the valve timing. But it engine dont turn its touchind valve/piston. get a genuine manual from basscliffs site.

Yes, or the tensioner was disassembled and steel ball went missing, Without ball pressing on ramp- preventing push back- I imagine the knob/spring would vibrate badly as engine ran.

The tensioner was a common part; many models shared the same assembly. The only difference I'm aware of though out the GS line is the 750/850 tensioners attach with three screws, but the others use two screws. Also, the later model GS tensioners have some plastic parts, like that wheel what went missing on this bike. Maybe the plastic wheel cracked and fell off? Wouldn't surprise me.
What I'm driving at is if you can find an old used tensioner to take parts from, any GS tensioner will work. Rebuilding what you have is pretty simple once you get going on it.

You should be able to loosen the lock nut and turn the used to be knob end and push the piston out to tighten the chain. Then lock it down so it can't move (like you lock it to remove the tensioner) If it runs good it should get you home.
