    Fuel petcock

I have a 1979 GS1000s. This is the second one I have had the first being new in 1979. The question I am looking for an answer is related to the fuel petcock. My original 1979 had the same fuel petcock as all GS1000 models and that is what is listed in the parts manuals. The one I have now has a different petcock with no lever and bolt spacing that is father apart than the normal gs1000 one. The only other one I have seen with this petcock is in the Barber museum. I spoke with Brian Slark there and he did not know why they are different. Does anyone have any information on this. I only find one listed in the factory shop manual and it is not the same as on my bike or the one in the Barber museum.

The one without the lever is a later model petcock I do believe.
Those came out in '80 on the GS1000C's and GS1000E's, not to sure about the S model.

With 50mm bolt centres you've got the dreaded 1980 fuel tap. It was fitted to some GSs in '79 as well over here. My GS1000SN has one.

My 1980 GS1000ET has this type of petcock, and it still works fine.
You just need to have a screw driver to put it into the prime position if you have left the bike for a long time (Weeks), as the fuel in the float bowls will have evaporated and you will flatten your battery trying to get them to fill up again.

The trick is to put it in the PRI position with said screwdriver, then give the bike a quick blip of the starter so the vacume in carb No:2 causes the valve in the petcock to shuttle across and let the fuel flow on its own without the need to have the starter on.
Give it about 30 secs and turn the valve back to normal then Start as normal.

I remember swearing at it a lot until I realised it wouldn't prime in the 'PRI position' until the engine was turned over a couple of times.

            Cheers

The leverless petcock has 50 mm bolt spacing. There aren't any other Suzuki GS petcocks with that spacing. Suzuki went to the leverless style because they added CV carbs in 1980 and the top caps would foul the old style petcock.
