    1980 Suzuki GS550E

Have a question regarding carburetors on Suzuki 1980 GS550E. I'm in the middle of rebuilding my carburetors. Purchased a rebuild kit but looks like some parts are missing there. First: on the top of main jet of my original carburetor was a strange looking spring that keeps float up - there is no such spring in the rebuilding kit. Second: The main jet on my original carburetor has little net filter (like cup) - there is no such thing in the rebuilding kit.
Third: there is no pilot jet plug (rubber plug) present in my rebuilding kit.
Are those parts necessary to have carburetors working properly. Where can I get such parts ? I was searching all available sources and did not see any of those parts. Thanks

You can reuse pretty much everything inside your carbs but yea, read the rebuild tutorial.

I have the same bike. Rebuild kits are a joke. You need 4 new bowl gaskets, 4 new rubber pilot plugs ( I got both of these off Ebay) and a new metric o-ring set from Harbor Freight ($5.00). You reuse all parts except o-rings, pilot plugs and gaskets. The kits are a joke and low quality. Stick with the original parts and clean them well. Dont use a welding tip cleaner either on the jets

I don't know how many times we have to say it, but,

MR ROBERT BARR's "O" rings are the standard by which all others are judged and CHEAP.

I don't know for a fact that the Harbor Freight O-ring kit won't work, but I do know that some of the required sizes are specific. I might pick up a kit to have a peek. One thing that might be worthwhile also is sourcing Viton O-rings instead of Buna N, since they will hold up better to all the nasty chemical being included in gasoline these days.

Mark this guy for his "my bike won't start, run accelerate" thread. If you go to the effort to properly dip and clean up your carbs why would you cheap out on the o rings?.Do what you want I'm sticking with the known good supplier.

Just saying if he did not want to wait and had a HF store close by that many others use there nitrile metric o-ring set with favorable results. This is more a quickness issue than anything else. If he has the time then Mr. Barr's is going to be a better product but if he needs it quick & dirty HF will work, that's all I'm saying

You don't need those little screens. Just make sure your gas tank is clean.

What's HF's part number for this miracle kit? I have to recon my competition...

I believe it's an apples and oranges comparison. If I recall correctly, the nitrile from HF will break down over a season or three, eventually requiring a re-do. I,however, have no scientific testing reports to back this up. Somebody (Mr. Barr perhaps?), please put two orings in two different baby jars and post high res pics when there's a noticeable difference. I look forward to seeing this thread revived in a year or two. heheh. RJ
