JIS screwdrivers for Carb Rebuild

Hey Everybody,

Quick question: do i really REALLY need JIS screwdrivers to do my carb rebuild or can i get it done with regular phillips head screwdrivers (carefully)?

If so, where is the best place to order them from? i found a site that has a #2 phillips, but not a #3 phillips.

Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

No need to bother with the JIS screwdrivers if you haven't already got them. THE most important screwdrivers when stripping your carbs are the flatheads that you'll use to fit the mixture screw and pilots; these need to be a perfect fit if you want to guarantee zero problems.

Thanks for the info folks. I'll check out those sites, i might pick up a set. And yes, i'm definately going to ensure the flatheads have the right blade thickness. I'm using your tutorial as a guide Ed. Very informative.

I'm pretty sure these carbs have been pretty neglected. I'm going to post some pictures. I'm sure i'll have more questions as i go, as this is my first such project.

i just tried ordering online from mcmasters in the USA. they sent me back a nicely worded email stating that "due to the complexity of US Export regualtions, McMaster-Carr only accepts orders from our established customers in canada. we're sorry we cannot help you."

darn it, they had a nice set of #1,#2,#3 for $25.00! i guess i'll just try n be careful when i extract those screws.

Not sure if they're JIS, but the bits that come with this impact tool:

grabbed screws perfectly on the carbs. BTW, that's without using the impact part - I never used that on the carbs. Even some screws I looked at and said "no way anything's ever going to grab that" it grabbed and got them out without fuss. If you have a Sears left near you, it's worth checking out. Philips are #2/#3/#4 IIRC.

The Phillips we're accustomed to have a sharper taper than the JIS. If you use a P1 Craftsman (41294) on the bowl screws, for example, you can see that the tip bottoms out well before the sides of the screwdriver are engaged with the screw head.

One approach is to grind the final 1mm or so off of the tip of the Craftsman; this will give you a taper that's closer to the JIS, and you can see that it fits the screw better.

There are plenty of Doubting Thomases out there on this subject. Once you start using JIS, you won't trust 'regular' Phillips on important (functionally or cosmetically) screws.

I used regular ol craftsman screwdrivers. Then again I only disassembled them with that; seeing as I replaced all of the assembly screws with SS allen heads. If you go that route, remember your anti seize

They sell a JIS impact driver kit for $117 but you can get the replacement set of insert bits for $38.. I didn't even know where was a #4 bit must be huge..

thanks for the heads up. i think i'll get a set. anxious to start this weekend.

On a related note. i took a look inside my airbox for the first time since i bought the bike last month. i'm a newbie, maybe that shoulda been one of the first things i looked at ..anyways...

the foam on the filter literally disintegrated when i touched it. i'm assuming that this is not normal. there were cobwebs and dead bugs n crap in there. i couldnt find a part # on the filter nor did i find anything on the z1 enterprises website. i would also like to order some pilot jet plugs but didnt see them on the site either.

would someone mind pointing me in the right direction for these items?

Z1 should have the pilot jet plugs. Call them if you can't find them on-line. For the filter consider buying a Suzuki OEM filter. Available at your favorite dealership (or on-line) original Suzuki part source. Another option is a UNI filter. They are equivalent to OEM but reuse the filter cage.

Just a quick note on the JIS screwdriver situation, even though it was touched on in an earlier post. Before you buck up for the JIS drivers, have a look at the condition of the existing screws. If they're not up to your standards, and you plan to replace them with anything but OEM hardware, skip the JIS drivers.

You can use vicegrips or slot them with a dremel to get them off, then toss them and replace with allen or standard phillips head screws and save yourself the trouble of have two sets of screwdrivers.

Truth is, the cost of a set of JIS drivers will cover the cost of an SS screw kit, with enough left over for a tube of anti-seize. Use the screwdrivers you already own.
