Ian, it's not a matter of some of us being die-hard bikers. It's more of a matter that we all want to ride and the easiest way to assure yourself you won't have problems at all is to dig into it right off the bat. There is nothing about these carbs that are that hard to do or will mess up while you are in there (as long as you don't break a float post (AMHIK)). Just run on prime, but tie a ribbon or somesuch around your key to remind you to turn off petcock. I assume you followed vac line down to front of #2 carb and made sure it was attached. It's great that the bike runs decent- give it some probably long overdue maintenance this winter and enjoy troublefree riding next year.1981 gs650L
