    Exhaust gaps

I finally got my '81 850 (no L) on the road last night. Aside from a couple of issues, it was a great ride. I had some backfiring through the right exhaust. I looked at it and it definitely isn't a stock exhaust, it is a 4 into 2 design with no crossover. The exhaust bolts were only hand tight.

Also, where the header goes into the muffler, one pipe is joined by a phillips screw and the other is welded. It looks like a self-tapping screw. There isn't any insulation between the header and the muffler where they join. Could this be the cause of the back firing? If so, what can I put into the joint to fill it up and seal the leak?

It is boggy in the low and mid-range, but I haven't done the plug chops or anything else, but they are on the list.
Working...
