empty gas tank full crank case

ok 1982 gs 400L just changed the oil to get my m license in belleville on wednesday

went to start it today since there was a lovely puddle of gas drippin from my air box and found an empty gas tank and a full tank of gas in the crank case needle valve assy???floats??

i was going to rejet since i have no air filter anymore and glasspack mufflers

any ideas on the gas in the oil instead of the tank ??

petcock always on res or on

    thanks

First, make sure you understand which position is which on the petcock.

Second, make sure the petcock actually shuts off when you stop the engine.

Third, you might want to also check the float valves in the carbs to make sure they close properly.

Before you abandon your existing needle and seat, try this:
Clean the needle with carburetor cleaner and a soft toothbrush or cloth.
Soak a cotton swab with cleaner and buff the seat and rim. Make certain that NO cotton remains. Once both parts are clean, the needle should function properly.

Before I started doing all my own work on my bikes my mechanic Tony pulled a needle and put it in a dremel and polished the small wear mark off on some 2000grit sandpaper. We then adjusted the tang on the floats to ensure we didn't change the float height and it worked perfectly for me for years.
Use really light pressure and just polish it.
If you can get newer needles with the rubber tip I'd go that route. It's a much less redneck fix and the spring in the needle will be more reliable.

You also have an O ring that the float valve mounts to the carb with, they go bad too...

So the petcock is not set to the Prime position?

How did you adjust the spring? If you made it too stiff, the petcock could starve the engine at higher demand/ lower vacuum situations - like highway speeds.

for the petcock spring i just measured it when it came out and gave it a little extra length, and no it does not leak in "on" or "res", if the spring is too much its easyer to change it then pull my carbs out

for the polish i already tried the Q-tip and light polish ,

i found a set of needles and ass'y s that came out of a 1990 ltf250 quadrunner , im going to make sure that they are exactly what i need before i buy them ( matched up at work)

the old needle is longer and sits deeper in the housing but measures top needle to bottom housing 19.64mm

the new one is the same (mm) but a smaller needle, just not drilled as deep still the same higth though

will find out on monday when i get back to work

ok just at work now and measured the need and seat
                        old is 19mm

the new needle and seat are 19.40mm

so any reason why this could not work with a little re-adjusting on the floats ????

                        everything else measures true
