    GS750E carb problem

My 1980 GS750E is running strangely.
It barely ran when I got it.
It has a 4to1 header, and pod filters.
I increased the pilot jet size to one step up from stock.
    The mains are 142s
It is very hard to start, and unless it has been running for a while, always requires the use of the choke.
after it is running, and driving, it runs good on the pilot jets to about 2300rpm.
Then from there to about 3600rpm it can barely pull itself. When I hit around 3600 it takes off like a rocket, and pulls strong all the way to redline.
What do I need? Larger mains, or a different set of needles. The stock needles are in the highest position. It seems like it is fuel starved in the midrange. Plugs look like they haven't even been run. No black, or white residue.
    Any Help?

Are you sure about the 142 mains? sounds BIG! Any brand name on those pods, cuz some are apparently challenging.Follow the link to Basscliff's site for good carb info, especially the need for thorough (no shortcuts) cleaning. The low speed circuits in these carbs plug up real easy, causing lots of frustration. Understand that the "choke" is actually an enrichment device and not a blocking plate.

      Greetings and Salutations!!

      Hi Mr. robpreston,

Usually you would want to go with a Dynojet Stage 3 kit. They have specially tapered needles with at least 5 notches that make raising them and lowering them, for tuning purposes, much easier. Otherwise you have to manually shim the stock needles, but they have the wrong taper for the "pipes and pods" application anyway. That's why the midrange is so wonky.
