    Gs 400 e 1991

I have a GS 400 E 1991 which was given to me by a friend. I'm having a problem as when its started it idles fine as soon as it is given revs it splutters struggles to get up the revs. Once it is over about half revs it is okay. It backfires slightly and you can here it "backfiring" in the air box. I've cleaned out both jets in each carb and their was a fair amount of rust particles in each of the bowls. I think it is due to lack of fuel, I've got a few other things in mind too check but I'm hoping someone has come across this problem and knows the solution. Thanks everyone Nath.

First off, welcome to the forums!

Next.. do some searching around here, but what you really need is a good proper full on carb clean and potentially a rust treatment of your fuel tank.

Given your bike's a '91 I'm not sure that anyone here will know how your carbs go together, but BassCliff should be along at some point soon to give you your mega welcome and on his site you'll find a couple of carb cleaning guides that should help.

Yes! Definitely thoroughly clean the carbs and clean out the fuel tank and petcock screen.

        a 91 400 would be a bandit?
look at your title...81 is more likely.

I've sorted it, it was nothing to do with the carbs. Bad fault finding on my behalf, I thought the engine was sluggish but this was due to it being an old bike and never seeing it run before, but when i did eventually check this and soon found that one cylinder was not firing due to the ignition coil which needs replacing. Its a J reg bike and I don't think that there was to many of these bikes produced as its really hard to find info on them but here is a link of the type of bike it is from 1991. Thanks for the help.

            Greetings and Salutations!!

            Hi Mr. nathmissin,

You may also find some help at www.gstwin.com.

In what part of the world do you reside? There are different models and specs for lots of Suzuki bikes depending on the market.

But everything starts with properly cleaned carbs. You'll find a guide to the GS450 carb cleaning process on my little website. It should give you insight as to what is necessary. Don't use "carb kits". Instead, just order an O-ring kit from http://cycleorings.com, completely disassemble, dip, and clean all of the metal bits. Check out the other carb cleaning guides for more tips and best practices.

Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'.

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

If there's anything you'd like to know about the Suzuki GS model bikes, and most others actually, you've come to the right place. There's a lot of knowledge and experience here in the community. Come on in and let me say "HOoooowwwDY!"....

All of these tasks must be addressed in order to have a safe, reliable machine. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

No from Great Britain, anyone got any idea where to get an ignition coil for this bike it seems impossible looking for one.

Aaaah looks like a smaller bore version of the GS500 then... interesting! Never seen one like that before...

If you can find the part number for the coil, you can go somewhere like www.alphasports.com and do a reverse parts lookup to work out what other models it fits, most likely you'll find the GS500 ones will be fine I suspect.

I'd also recommend jumping on the GS Twins forum seeing how close to a 500 it seems to be

I will have a look there. The 500 coil looks exactly the same, there is a guy near me who I found on eBay that is selling one for a 500 so I will try that and reply here on how on get on. Hmm I'm now wondering if the bike would easily take a 500cc engine and carbs. By the way thanks for the help on here guys, a wealth of information here.

Good chance it's all interchangeable... some stuff stayed common right from the first '80 GS450 through to the 2009 (at least) GS500...

Cool I will see, I've just fitted a GS 500 ignition coil to my GS 400 E and it works and the bike is running sweet now.
