Are the threads in the tank itself still good?

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it. -

Sounds like it was just the bolt. When you put a "new" bolt in there, do so very carefully just to make sure it was just the bolt threads that were messed up, any resistance or tightening and you might want to back off and reevaluate the situation.
