GS1000 airbocx
Hey guys, Just bought my second Suzuki GS, its a 1980 GS1000e, tank lined, painted, rear piece painted, carbs rebuilt, new battery, plugs, good tires, 30k miles, picked it up yesterday for 400 bucks. It has pod filters on it now with stock jetting, and cut off mufflers, my plan right now is get it to stock and get it running right, so I am curious, what years of airbox will fit on it. Will a 78 airbox fit on my 80? Same questions for exhaust? I searched the forum here, but I didn't have much luck. I used to have an 83 GS650e, so I am not completely a newb when it comes to these bikes!
Thanks!Tags: None

Hmm, good to know, So are the typical tuning issues that plague these bikes an issue with that unique carb setup?

Due to the air filter housing location directly over the battery, I think pods make sense on those. I'm putting them on a '78 I just picked up. Plus, it has couple missing and damaged parts in the air box/filter housing set up anyway.
I've never actually seen a 1980 1000E. I know they were made, but have never seen one.
The carbs are not unique. They are pretty much like all the CV carbs on every Suzuki (and other brands) starting in '80 pretty much. It is just unique on the 1000E (and 1000S) for that year. Previous 1978 and 1979 1000's had slide carbs, not CV's. Every 1000G, 1100E, 1100G, etc. has them.Last edited by 850 Combat; 01-16-2012, 12:02 PM.sigpic Too old, too many bikes, too many cars, too many things

Stock for me. I had one years ago with pods and a VH pipe. Jetting was ok.

The rear air box is common between the 1980 CV carb bikes and the '78 & '79, but the front airbox section is different. As Tom says, the front airbox could be modified by opening up the holes so the larger boots will fit, the problem with doing this is determining how large to make the holes. It's critical to avoid any airleaks in the system otherwise the bike won't run right.Ed

Would the airbox from an 81G work? I know the design is a little different, with no rear airbox section, but if the carbs are the same, it should work find right?

I'm pretty sure the shaft drive airbox won't fit in a chain drive 1000 frame.Ed

Try posting in Parts Wanted section; forum member had one for mine.
You might want to find better condition chrome end caps or paint.

Let me know daniel, a halfway decent 80 airbox setup is proving a challenge to come across when i dont want to trade my first born for it.
