    Strange Runnin's II

    1983 Suzuki GS1100ESD
Weirdness. If I set the idle so it will run when it's warm, the hotter it gets, the faster it idles. The only way I can run it is if the idle is turned down too low to idle when off of choke, and then eventually (20 minutes of riding) it will get up to normal idle, but sometimes it goes higher, (2 grand or more) or lower, ( barely running, sounds like something with a hot cam). Gas mileage is horrible, if I run in stop and go city traffic, it fouls plugs.

Valves have been adjusted, carbs pulled COMPLETELY apart. They were VERY clean. They are even cleaner now. Checked floats, they float. The levels were checked. Put in new needle and seats, checked all jets for "stockness". Put everything to stock, not it was different before. Replaced the bad o-rings, the rest were still round and supple. Synced the carbs. Set the timing.
Why does it still run like a bag of sh$t?

"checked all jets for "stockness". Put everything to stock, not it was different before. Replaced the bad o-rings, the rest were still round and supple".......So is this telling us you changed the jetting from what it was BEFORE you did the cleaning? Was the bike running fine with the other set up? What made you decide to change the jets..problems running or throttle response? And lastly, Why didnt you replace ALL the orings? They may seem soft and supple but who knows if they are really sealing?

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

      Bad fuel tap?

How high is your oil level? Crankcase full of gas?

The idle thing is from air leaks, most likely

No, I didn't touch it. Because I didn't buy it new, I wanted to make sure nobody had been messing around inside the carbs. The thing has never run reeeeally well since I've had it, it just seems to have gotten worse this past summer. What have I done? Just checked things. It seems the only thing that was out was the timing and of course, the carb syncronization. As far as the O-Rings go, I didn't put them in because I didn't have them and the ones that were in there seemed good.
After reading through other threads, I see the same issues with my bike that people with faulty petcocks are having with their bikes. I'll give that a try.
        Thank you for your input.

Your symptom of a rising idle speed is a classic sign of an intake leak.

Your bike does not have intake boots with o-rings, but you do have rubber hoses from the carbs to the engine.
If they are a bit "leaky", it will cause exactly what you are experiencing.

Another source of carb weirdness on that model is the lid on the airbox where the filter resides. Many folk removed them thinking it increased performance. It does not, but it does muck with the jetting. If one is not present, you can do a quick patch by McGuyver's method: duck tape.
