    gsx550ef air box removal

HHHEEEEELLLLPPP !!!!! does anyone know whats involved in getting the airbox out from my gsx 550, bloody hell, ive tried all ways and no joy, the p.o obviously had a backfire that caused the air filter to catch fire and melted part of the airbox, so, i want to renew it with one ive sourced while giving the carbs the once over, but god !!! i cannot for the life of me see how to get it out without dismantling the full floater linkage ??? cheers jon

Well, got the bugger out, had to use a tyre lever to press down on the top of the airbox using the frame tube as a levering point(with a rag to protect the paint, and then using the wooden handle of a 4oz ball pein hammer knock it out , sideways, not ideal, but it worked, to re install i will use the same method but will lightly smear grease over the points that make contact to aid progress, got the carbs off too, so will be stripping them and taking them to the bike shop where he has a ultrasonic bath to dip them in, i,m pretty sure the o ring kit form Robert Barr for the gs550e is going to be the same as what i,m after so will be ordering from him soon, cheers

You drop the suspension by removing the two giant ass bolts from the cushion lever.

You are lucky you did not break anything.

Update ! after getting the airbox out and the carbs on the bench, i got the float chambers off and needle and jets out and 2 out of the 4 pilots were choked up, then i discovered the air screws were bodged by a p.o !! 2 are seized solid and will not undo and 1 has been hacked to death, so i need a set of twin port carbs now if anyone has a good set///dammit

I have a few sets of these
One set off a parts bike I bought from pousseux a bit back

Shippings would be a pig though

they are on ebay quite often.

Try squirting those screws with (proper) penetrating oil and cracking your screwdriver with a tack hammer.
