    Reconnecting throttle and choke cables

I'm in the process of reassembling my '82 GS1100G engine and am at the stage where I need to connect the throttle and choke cables to the carbies. But I can't find out exactly where/how to connect them! I have a manual and a workshop guide but suspect that the writers of these books assume that everyone knows where they go. I think I do but want to do it right!

Can anyone point me to where I can find out? I have already checked out all the carb rebuild guides at Basscliff's site and they are great but don't explain where the throttle and choke cables actually attach.

While I'm at it I would love to reduce the length of the choke cable. I don't want it to come out onto the handle bars. But first things first...

    Thanks guys!

Not sure but I think it might the same set up across the GS line up...

There should be a curved bracket that attaches at the front two cap screws on the #3 (inside right) carburetor. I find it much easier to attach the bracket before connecting the two cables. The choke attachment has a 90deg curve that allows the cable to make the horizontal actuation of the chokes. On your choke rod there will be a long spring and a thin metal tab that separates from the #4 choke pull, you will pull the tab compressing the spring, and set the cable to where it falls within the grooves of BOTH the tab and the #4 choke pull. That should be it for the choke.

As for the throttle, I find it much, much easier to attach the cable with carbs disconnected from the boots. The throttle cable shoots straight down between the #2 and #3 carbs, where you will find the cable attachment point on the throttle mechanism. You will have to, with your other hand or with a screwdriver open the throttle on the carbs, and fit the cylindrical cable end into the round opening on the throttle pull. You will have to make sure that actual cable goes into the cut out on the right side of the throttle pull so that the cable rests inside the deep slot on the actual opening mechanism.

Put the carbs back in the boots and you're ready to go..

That was quick! Thanks, that sounds about right. I was coming to the same conclusion that they would be easier to fit if the carbs were off the bike.

      Thanks mate - good stuff!

I've always been able to attach the throttle cable with the carbs in place by first inserting the barrel end into the lever, then attaching the cable housing. But I've got VM carbs, so my throttle lever may be easier to reach than yours.

Yeah, the instruction I gave is for the CV carbs.. I have no idea about the VM set up.. Good Luck..

            Hi,

Have a look at the Air Intake Repair guide on my website. I'm not sure if your choke/throttle linkages are the same but it may point you in the right direction.

            Thank you for your indulgence,

I mount the cables with the carbs half way out of the bike on the left side
and tighten/adjust them after they are tightened to the intake clamps.

Have a look through Macguyver's 650 thread, I think he'll have the answer to your choke lever moving from the 'bar...

Are you doing a restoration project of some kind on a GS? Let everyone see what you are doing by posting the details here.

It's a long thread but it's in there somewhere!

I was actually able to connect the Throttle cable with the carbs installed(CV)
But I was really lucky, and it took two people to accomplish.

The way I do it now...get the carb rack set half-way in the bike, so they are
resting half-way on the Carb Boots, remainder of the carb rack is sort of hanging off. Pull Up the throttle Wheel on the carb-rack, then insert the Cable End into the little circular slot, then press the cable along the Wheel, and slowly let off of the Carb wheel, and it will retract back down.

As for the Choke cable...I've always managed to install that once the carb rack is installed...on my 82 650 CV.

Lots of good help here - thanks! I will attempt it today. Mine are CV carbs.

                      Hi,

I found a few pictures. On my bike, the choke is the higher assembly, the throttle is the lower one.

Macguyver's bike was an '81, and would have had the "choke" cable in the middle, not out on the handlebar. That setup started with the '82 bikes.

Hey Steve, mine is an '81 650E with the choke lever on the left handlebar underneath the horn button.. I wonder if the center pull chokes were a difference between different models..

Although I'm still going to read Macguyver's thread as I too am interested in relocating mine..
