1980 gs850 petcock advise

I'm eventuallly going to swap my "L" tiny tank for a "G" huge tank. I'm fairly sure I can make this work with some minor mods. I purchased a nice "G" tank. It had a petcock, but I'm thinkin' I will replace it. I'm having a hard time finding a 1980 gs850g petcock. Does anyone know of petcocks that are compatible with the 1980g? Does the 1980 "L" petcock (no adjustment lever) fit the "G" tank?

One more thing. I will be swapping out my L triple tree (with a g triple tree) when I switch the G tank for the L tank. So... will I essentially have reassigned my "L" into a "G"? Except for the rear fender of course. I already changed the seat (cb550), so that is not a part of the equation.

Ah, the 1980 models. Search for the phrase "oddball petcock". I think they're still available new/OEM. They're a different size than the other years, and without the PRI position.

Yes, the 1980 GS850GT has the regular vacuum operated petcock with the three-position lever. Thank goodness!

You can still by the OEM petcock from most any online Suzuki vendor or get an OEM-ish replacement from Z1 for less money.

Yep, the '80 G models escaped that "wonderfulness" that was the "dreaded '80 petcock".

I have an '80 850G, my son has an '80 1000G. Both of them with "normal" petcocks.

Good to know. I actually went out to Z1 and checked their OEM replacement petcocks, but none are listed for the 850GT. Not that they're exactly authoritative: I told them they had the wrong rear wheel bearings listed for my bike some months ago - and they're still wrong.

Is the normal petcock a direct bolt on?

The part number supplied by Mr. Nessism will bolt right on. To be safe you may want to get the O-ring too.
