Airbox rubbers question?

I have a 79 GS1000 which is in need of some new airbox to carb rubbers as mine are as hard as plastic. I am however struggling to find replacements and the only type I can find are the CV type which have an internal diameter of 53mm? Mine are about 41mm. Could I make an ally collar for the carbs to compensate the difference or would that slow the airflow down too much and obviously fit the Later airbox...any suggestions anyone???

There's another couple of options.

1. Buy some GS750 inlet rubbers (these are available separately). A couple of guys have said they were going to do this but have never come back to say if they fitted. I suspect that they will but can't say 100% for sure. Will you be that chap who reports back saying they do fit?

2. Remove the existing rubbers and soak in a xylene / wintergreen oil mix. It's meant to soften them well. I keep meaning to try it but haven't done it yet. Search 'wintergreen' on here and you'll get the recipe.

The airbox for the CV carbs is slightly different by the way and the boots are shorter as well as fatter. I have seen this combo fitted but you have to shunt the airbox forward a bit. Rubber collars were used instead of alloy ones as when you shunt the thing forward it drops as well (because of the angle of the mounting plate).

Thanks that might be worth a shot and I would reply of course...The joys of restoration. The rubber is that hard on mine I can stand on them !!! As in life ita always that rubber thing that let's you down haha...

well I have found some NOS GS750 ones, same I.D. of 43mm but 5mm longer so I will have to wait and see (as from the USA), hopefully success but will post my findings...

@Hampshirehog...I thought about the CV carbs, but that would mean new carbs, airbox, rubbers and cyl head....maybe but for now stick with the originals...

Try soaking for awhile in automatic transmission fluid (ATF) (easier to get than xylene and wintergreen oil ). ATF has seal conditioners in it that will soften rubber.

But don't expect miracles.

I just put my 78 1000 carbs back on with the boots from the 78 750. Works good. A little tweaking but they fit. You have to tilt the carb boots down. They have a slight pitch to them. Much nicer getting the carbs back in with flexible boots. I have a 750 as well so I did some measuring with my calipers before I tried this and then I bought them when one of the big sales was going on....Good luck.

rubber air box boots recipe

My rubber boots to air box was not going on. So I boiled a big pot of water and threw the boots in for about 4-5 minutes till they were medium. Worked great they were supple and seemed to have returned to there original shape.

I have read that is the recipe to get those on. Also was told to push in some tapered oversize plugs where the carbs attach, at least until you
get the boots on the carbs.

If you get them from ebay, check the description.
make sure it says "plyable and soft"
