Brass or plastic?

I was wondering if I can replace my brass floats with plastic ones. I have a gs450. There are plastic floats in the basscliff tutorial for measuring float height. I'm not sure what model gs that is, but mabye they are interchangeable? Reason I'm asking is recently I had a mysterious gas leak, and it turned out to be a float at the wrong height. Problem was I measured them a few times, and the height was correct, but on brass floats measuring the height of the floats relative to the float bowl does not indicate fuel level, because small imperfections in the brass change the volume of the floats, resulting in different float levels even when set to the correct height. I think with the plastic ones it would be safe to assume they would be very consistent in build quality and volume. Does anyone have an opinion on brass vs plastic floats?

I thought all these carbs had plastic floats- sooner or later a 450 owner should chime in- maybe someone replaced yours??? seems strange

If your 450 is of the 80 - 82 vintage, then brass is all there is I'm afraid. The plastic ones definitely won't fit.

I believe you can still buy them new but if yours is leaking I have seen people solder them as well.

Oh, and if you have a leak, from the bowl, it's quite possible your float valve has an issue too...
