Tom's not the only one that's grumpy about excessive noisy motorcycles. In my view loud bikes are a selfish expression and irresponsible. I've started placing members here running open pipes on their bikes on my forum "ignore list".Ed

I don't recommend it for those that want a "pretty" bike but, here is an example of how good these bikes CAN sound.
About twenty years ago, I had a Yoshi header with no exhaust from the collector back.
So, I bought a $20 automotive 2.25" straight-through glass-pack muffler and made a 3" mid-pipe to it.
As you can see with the cardboard tube, it has NO restriction whatsoever.
(Which DOES NOT HURT the bottom end torque at all, BTW.)
After-market .392/.392 camshafts.
Upon deceleration, it has a sweet, deep baritone sound that resembles that of a Ferrari.
It DOES NOT weigh a ton (Less than a stock system) and is easy to remove the entire welded system with 9 bolts to change the oil.
The entire system cost me a whole $100.00.

THAT is a nice sounding bike. Sorry prudes... a little sportiness and a growl sounds better than some of the shreiking, ratty, coffee can sounding MAC systems out there.

Even the V-H Sidewinder doesn't really give a deep rumble. Won't get that from an inline 4 at all.
Wanna sound like a V-Twin, get a V-Twin.

That supertrapp sounds good. Also eric's homemade exhaust I wonder how it will sound with a 1000. Do you think there will be much difference?
For those who mentioned V-twins, I am not interested in them. I like my GS1000, Thank you very much. , I just got it. Buying a V-Twin just for the sound of it is a pretty ridiculous idea (no offense). Besides, in my opinion I like our 4 cylinder engines better than a v-twin for cruising on canyons, (which is what I use the bike for other than daily riding to work).

I am not really hung up on pipe sound. When I see the cruiser/bobber builds, though, I wonder how dissonant that look is to the typical sound of these bikes. No pipe is going to give that "potato-potato" rumble of a Hardly Worth-it . . .

We had a new guy on the GSR last (?) year who wanted to make his GS engine sound like a HD, and then got really offended when it was pointed out to him that it would be cheaper to buy a HD.

I find the Vance and Hines 4-1 a good compromise. It will whisper through a hospital zone or growl real good if you want to wake up the cows.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

no wonder none of you boring farts dont watch bike racing if you dont like loud pipes,
o the roar and rumble of the ducatis. the howling banshee scream of the honda v5 engine, the burble and blat from the yamaha straight 4's.
oh, and then you get to the earbursting moto2 bikes, it is an awesome sound when 40 of them all pass you when you are 20 feet away from the track.
stuff it, if you want loud, go loud and if not, stick me on your ignore list1978 GS1085.
Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

We get 99 herds for every one exotic bike, it sucks listening to the same old low performance donkey engines constantly.
I never heard anything loud in England, even the rare Herdlys are politely muffled....Last edited by tkent02; 05-22-2012, 04:53 PM.
